We developed a cardiac stem cell assay to recapitulate the genetic mutation in the SMAD2 gene which has previously been associated with severe congenital heart disease, and demonstrated that several mutations have a causative effect for malformation of cardiomyocytes, potentially improving understanding of congenital heart disease, counseling of parents, and future genetic therapies.
