Documenting that some 2/3 of minimally verbal children with autism also have a co-occurring speech disorder, apraxia, means that clinicians can now provide more targeted treatment to these severely-affected children, possibly improving their communication skills and decreasing aggression and self-injury, improving long-term outcomes.
