Phagoptosis is a newly characterized form of cell death, found to be responsible for neuronal cell death after stroke and in response to other toxic insults. I utilized a model of phagoptosis in Drosophila and determined that cells can hijack lysosomal proteins to eliminate other nearby cells; this information may help scientists to uncover better therapeutics to block this cell death.
